Glamour vs. Hunger: The Met Gala 2024 & the Hunger Games

Why is everyone so upset about the Met Gala? According to BBC, a ticket costs a staggering $75,000 while a 10-seat table begins at $350,000.

This lavish expenditure heavily contrasts with the harsh realities faced by many around the globe:

  1. In 2022, Congenital syphilis cases rose by 31%, resulting in 282 stillbirths and infant deaths in the U.S.

  2. In northern Gaza, UNICEF screenings found acute malnutrition among children under 5 as high as 25%.

  3. Roughly 44.2 million Americans experienced food insecurity this year.

  4. About half of Americans adults suffer from 1 or more preventable chronic diseases.

  5. Only 1 in 10 American adults meet the federal fruit or vegetable intake recommendations.

  6. There are 653,104 people living without a home in the United States.

  7. Nearly 2,500 persons were killed or injured due to gang violence in Haiti.

  8. More than 7 million people have fled their homes in Congo.

  9. Sudan's real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is likely to reduce by 18.3% in 2024.

The cost of a single Met Gala ticket could significantly impact these issues. This year's event, in particular, drew comparisons to the dystopian "Hunger Games," where the elite indulge in opulence while the masses suffer. Although celebrities aren't directly celebrating the world's atrocities, their extravagant spending highlights a glaring insensitivity to global struggles; society is over it.

What we can we do to change this?
