1. Get to know what the test is for, improve your health literacy.

   Your prostate is a small gland near your bladder. It creates fluids that mix with sperm to create semen. The test is used to test for cancer.

2. What should I expect?

   The family physician will insert a gloved and lubricated finger inside your rectum, and will press on your prostate with their other hand. They will check for signs of an enlarged prostate, inflammation, or anything else unusual.

   They could also “order a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test along with your DRE, depending on your health and age. High levels of PSA in your blood could indicate an inflamed prostate, enlarged prostate, or certain types of prostate cancer”.

3. So when should I start?

   50 years+ is recommended!

4. How do I tell my spouse or friends when they ask where I am, I want to keep it confidential?

   Mention that you have a routine doctor’s checkup/physical.

5. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, what should I tell people?

   When you are ready, the truth. Provide them with websites, pamphlets, and other resources so that they can understand it for themselves. Community is important during these times, so build a strong one that will help you through this journey.
